YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES
You’re Having the Same Fight in Different Clothes
It starts somewhere small. A tone of voice, a plan that fell through, a dish left in the sink. Twenty minutes later you are somewhere you have both been a hundred times before, saying things you have both said a hundred times before, and neither of you can point to the moment it turned. You are not bad at this. You are stuck in something with a shape to it, and shapes can be changed once you can see them.
You start out talking about something small and end up somewhere you have both been a hundred times before.
One of you needs to settle it tonight. The other needs to walk away. Neither approach gets you anywhere.
You have started editing yourself. It is easier to say nothing than to start something.
The quiet after a fight lasts longer than it used to.
You still love each other. That is the part that makes this so confusing.
You cannot tell anymore if you are growing apart or just tired.
What Happens When Nothing Changes
Couples rarely fall apart over one conversation. It happens slowly, in the small decisions to let something go rather than bring it up again. Each one is reasonable on its own. Together they add up to two people living politely alongside each other, managing the relationship instead of being in it. The good news is that this is not usually a problem of caring less. Most couples who come to me still want the same thing. What they are missing is a way to reach each other that does not end where every other attempt has ended.
What Changes in Couples Therapy
A DIFFERENT WAY IN
You can name the pattern while it is happening instead of an hour later
You stop bracing for the next fight, which frees up a surprising amount of energy
You start hearing what your partner means, not just what they said
Conversations that used to escalate start finding an exit
Repair gets faster. The distance after a hard moment stops lasting for days
The relationship stops feeling like something you manage and starts feeling like somewhere you live

Someone Who Understands Where the Pattern Started
Alena Goldman, LMHC-D · Great Neck, NY & Virtual Throughout New York
I have spent more than nine years working with adults on attachment, the patterns formed in their earliest relationships and the way those patterns keep showing up decades later. That work turned out to be the most useful preparation I could have had for sitting with couples, because the things two partners keep colliding over are almost never invented in the marriage. They are brought into it. I work with couples in Great Neck and across Nassau County, and virtually with couples anywhere in New York State. My approach is direct and collaborative. I am not going to nod along for fifty minutes while the two of you have the same argument in front of me. I am going to slow it down, show you what is underneath it, and give you something you can actually use before you leave.

WHAT SETS THIS PRACTICE APART
The Pattern, Not Just the Fight
Plenty of couples therapy stops at communication skills. Those help, and I teach them. But a script only holds until the moment one of you gets genuinely activated, and then it goes out the window along with everything else. My focus is on why that particular moment lands so hard for that particular person. Once a couple understands that, the skills finally have something to stand on.
Two Cultures at the Same Table
I work with Russian-speaking and English-speaking clients, and I see couples where the two partners did not grow up with the same rules about what families say out loud. In Great Neck that comes up more often than people expect. What one partner reads as coldness the other learned as respect. Naming that difference, rather than treating it as a character flaw, changes the conversation.

THE PROCESS
What Couples Counseling Actually Looks Like
Most couples arrive a little braced, half expecting to be graded. That is not what this is. The first session is mostly me listening and asking questions, getting a picture of the relationship, what brought you here now, and what each of you is hoping is still possible. You will not spend the hour relitigating your worst argument. We will look at how the two of you move when things get hard, because the pattern shows up in the room quickly and it is easier to work with something we can both see.
GETTING STARTED
Three Steps to Get Started
Booking couples therapy is often the hardest part, and usually one of you is doing it on behalf of both. Here is exactly what happens.
1
Schedule a Free Intro Call
Fifteen minutes, no cost, and only one of you needs to be on it. We talk through what is going on and whether this is the right fit.
2
Come In Together
The first full session is for both of you. We map what is happening between you and agree on what you actually want to be different.
3
Change the Pattern
We work on the thing underneath the argument, at a pace that works for both of you, until the two of you can get to each other again.
