What EMDR Actually Looks Like

You don't have to relive everything in detail. EMDR is not traditional talk therapy. EMDR works by briefly focusing on the memory, enough for the brain to engage with it, while using bilateral stimulation (eye movements or gentle tapping) to help that memory process and resolve.

Most clients describe the experience as manageable and, over time, freeing. The changes tend to happen naturally as the emotional charge connected to the memory begins to decrease.

1

History & Preparation

We start by understanding your history and goals. We build a foundation of stability before any processing begins. Before processing traumatic memories begins, you will learn skills to manage strong emotions so you can feel more grounded and in control when difficult memories arise. You will never be thrown into the deep end.

2

Processing the Memory

Using bilateral stimulation, we work through specific memories that are connected to your current symptoms. You stay in the present while the memory loses its grip.

3

Integration & Growth

As memories resolve, clients naturally find that their self-perception shifts, their reactions change, and the life they want starts to feel more accessible.

EMDR Therapy Addresses the Source of the Problem

EMDR therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a well-researched method designed to help the brain process and resolve memories that became stuck. It does not require you to talk in detail about what happened, and it does not require you to relive the worst moments of your life.

At the beginning of EMDR therapy, clients learn practical skills that help them manage strong emotions and feel more grounded when difficult memories arise. These skills help you develop a greater sense of control and stability before deeper processing begins.

EMDR works with the brain's natural information processing system, the same system that processes emotional experiences during REM sleep. Through this process, traumatic memories can shift from being raw and emotionally reactive to becoming resolved and integrated.

The memory is not erased. You still remember what happened, but it no longer carries the same emotional intensity or influence over your present life.

What changes with EMDR

  • Intrusive thoughts lose their emotional charge and stop hijacking your day
  • Anxiety decreases as the memories driving it are resolved at the source
  • Negative beliefs about yourself shift — not through force, but naturally
  • Relationships feel safer when old wounds are no longer driving your reactions
  • You feel calmer and more grounded — without having to force it
  • The past stays in the past — where it belongs

Anxiety, depression, and the weight of difficult memories do not always appear in obvious ways. Sometimes they shape how you see yourself, how you respond to situations, and the kind of life you are able to live.

The experiences that left a mark on you did not disappear. They were stored, and they continue to influence the present in ways that can feel frustrating, confusing, or exhausting.

If any of this sounds familiar, there is a reason for it. Your mind learned ways to protect you from pain. The difficulty is that those responses were formed in the past and may no longer fit the life you are living now.

You replay the same memories over and over — and they still feel just as raw as the day they happened.

Anxiety follows you into every room — your relationships, your work, your sense of who you are.

You're reacting to the present through the lens of old wounds — and you know it, but you can't seem to stop.

Something that happened years ago still shapes how you feel about yourself — and the future you believe is possible.

The Longer It Goes Unaddressed, the More It Costs You

Intrusive thoughts and emotional reactivity do not tend to fade on their own. Without

working through the root, they continue to influence the relationships you choose,

the confidence you carry, and the opportunities you let pass because something inside tells

you that you are not safe, not worthy, or not capable.

Anxiety and depression rooted in trauma are different from day-to-day stress.

They often come from memories that were never fully processed,

and they usually do not respond to positive thinking,

time alone, or simply deciding to move on.

They need to be processed at the level where they live.

You deserve more than simply managing the symptoms. You deserve resolution.

"Have you ever noticed that something feels really upsetting at night, but the next morning you wake up with a calmer, more balanced perspective? That's because while you sleep —during REM sleep — your eyes move and your brain naturally organizes and processes emotional information. EMDR works in a similar way, but while you're awake and guided in therapy."
